    Using the Right Tool for the Job
     NASA scientists are using rubber duckies to track water currents from glacial melts to understand global warning.

    It's worked before, by accident. A decade or so ago a Japanese container ship lost a few tons of duckies in a typhoon, and they were tracked on their trans-oceanic journey. These ones promise a reward for reporting where people find them.

     On NPR news this morning:
    "There's a shift in thinking. The Corps [of Engineers] is starting to think it's no longer such a good idea to build on flood plains."

    I dunno- this smacks of governmental interference in people's fundamental freedoms to do shortsighted dumb things.

    Also, I can kill you with my brain...
     A game hardware company called OCZ announced a brain wave controlled interface called the "Neural Impulse Actuator," although some of it may also be facial muscles. Still, slaying monsters and goons by making faces could be fun in its own way.
    If I had a spare three hundred bucks, I'd be all over that.

    Cool thing video game
     Randomly cable channel-surfing this morning, I saw on G4 on X-play a quick review of several arty and atypical games they'd seen at a game expo or gotten advance buzz about... The most compelling one is called Crayon Physics Deluxe, an upgrade of a simple but ingenious freeware game by Petri Purho, a student at Helsinki Polytechnic in Finland.

    "Crayon Physics Deluxe is a 2D physics puzzle game, in which you get to experience what it would be like if your drawings would be magically transformed into real physical objects. Solve puzzles with your artistic vision and creative use of physics."

    Faulty pattern recognition recognised in pursuit of trivia
     Today I finally thought to chase down a fake factoid on IMDB.com and was enlightened. To wit: For ages now I'd been mixing up Scottish character actors Peter Capaldi and John Hannah. I feel silly and clever and geeky at the same time now. See, Peter Capaldi was Azolan, Valmont's manservant in Dangerous Liaisons, and the angel Islington in Neverwhere, and dozens of other things; whereas John Hannah was Matthew in Four Weddings and a Funeral (read poem at funeral), thieving brother Jonathan in the Mummy movies, and dozens of other things.

    Sometimes you have to look things up and find out. It's important, dammit.
